How to practise with shadowing

Use short Arabic passages to practise listening, rhythm and speaking aloud.

Shadowing means listening to a short passage and trying to say the words aloud close behind the speaker. Start with a text you mostly understand, so you can give your attention to the sounds and rhythm.

Listen before you speak

Read the passage and check the meaning. Listen once without speaking. On your next attempt, follow the Arabic text and say the words aloud just after you hear them.

Use one sentence at a time

If the whole passage feels fast, listen to a single sentence. Repeat it a few times, then move on. You can also listen, pause and repeat before trying to shadow continuously.

Focus on one detail

Choose a sound, a vowel or the rhythm of a phrase to pay attention to. After practice, try reading the passage on your own. You can record yourself privately and compare what you hear.
