English translation
Laura used a translation app to write a message to her neighbour, who had invited her to dinner. She was tired and wanted to decline politely, so she wrote in her own language that she could not come this time. The app produced a grammatically sound Arabic sentence, but it seemed firm and cold when her friend read it.
Her friend said, ‘The meaning is clear, but the message needs something before the refusal and something after it.’ They added thanks for the invitation and a sentence suggesting meeting another week. Laura’s decision did not change, but the relationship conveyed by the words became different.
Laura wondered why the app had not simply produced a suitable message from the start. Then she realised that she had not told it who the recipient was, how close they were, or what tone she wanted. She had requested a translation of words, whereas she needed help expressing a social situation.
Next time, she explained the context before asking for help, then reviewed the message herself. The app remained useful, but it was no longer the final authority on what should be said. Linguistic correctness alone does not ensure successful communication: a sentence may be accurate yet leave an impression its writer never intended. Laura therefore began asking two questions: ‘Is this what I mean?’ and ‘How might the person reading it understand it?’ The second question was no less important than the first.
