كان يوسف يشتري كتبا لتعلم العربية كلما شعر أن مستواه لا يَتَحَسَّن. في البداية يقرأ صفحات كثيرة، ثم ينشغل بالعمل ويترك الكتاب. وبعد شهر، يشتري كتابا آخر ويبدأ من جديد.
ذات مساء، سألته صديقته: «كم دقيقة تستطيع أن تدرس كل يوم، حتى في يوم مزدحم؟» قال: «ربما عشر دقائق». اقترحت أن يقرأ فقرة واحدة، ويختار منها ثلاث كلمات، ثم يكتب جملة عن حياته باستعمال إحداها. بدا التمرين بسيطا جدا، لكنه وافق على تجربته.
بعد أسبوعين، لم يكن قد أنهى كتابا، لكنه كان يتذكر جملا كتبها عن قطاره وطعامه وزملائه. وفي صباح يوم مشغول، قرأ فقرته في القطار بدلا من تَأْجِيلِهَا إلى المساء. أدرك أن العشر دقائق لم تصنع مُعْجِزَة؛ لكنها بقيت في يومه حين اختفت الخطط الكبيرة.
English translation
Youssef used to buy Arabic learning books whenever he felt his level was not improving. At first he would read many pages, then become busy with work and leave the book. A month later, he would buy another book and start again.
One evening, his friend asked him, ‘How many minutes can you study every day, even on a busy day?’ He said, ‘Perhaps ten minutes.’ She suggested reading one paragraph, choosing three words from it, and writing a sentence about his own life using one of them. The exercise seemed very simple, but he agreed to try it.
After two weeks, he had not finished a book, but he remembered sentences he had written about his train, food, and colleagues. One busy morning, he read his paragraph on the train instead of postponing it until evening. He realised that ten minutes had not worked a miracle; they had remained part of his day when the big plans disappeared.
