English translation
At her first meeting with her new team, Hala sat at the back of the room and opened her notebook. She had read the files beforehand and had a suggestion for improving how clients were welcomed. But the discussion moved quickly from one topic to another, and she could not find a suitable moment to join in.
When the meeting ended, the team manager said, ‘You seem to prefer listening.’ She smiled, but felt that her silence had become a permanent characteristic in his eyes. On the way to her desk, she wondered whether to email her suggestion or wait for the next meeting.
She chose to send a short message explaining her idea and added that she had been unable to present it during the discussion. The next day, the manager asked her to present the proposal, then admitted that he often interpreted silence as an unwillingness to participate.
At the next meeting, he allowed thinking time before asking for opinions and let people write their notes first if they wished. Not everyone became more talkative, but ideas appeared that had never reached the table before. Hala’s personality had not changed from one week to the next; the amount of space available to her had changed. The manager realised that an occupied chair does not always mean its occupant is present in the conversation, and that inviting someone to a meeting does not, by itself, invite them to participate.
