English translation
When his father’s old watch stopped, Mazen took it to a small watch repair shop. The man behind the counter examined it, then quoted a price that made Mazen raise his eyebrows. ‘I could buy a new watch for that amount,’ he said. The man calmly replied, ‘Certainly. But you asked me about repairing this one.’
Mazen left without leaving the watch. He thought he was making a rational decision: the watch was not rare and had little market value. But when he put it in his desk drawer, he remembered how his father used to look at it before saying it was time to go home. It was not always accurate, but that little gesture was part of his childhood.
That evening, he spoke to his sister. She did not tell him he should repair it. Instead, she asked, ‘Do you want to keep only its appearance, or hear its sound too?’ He opened the drawer and held the watch to his ear. He heard nothing.
The next day, he returned to the shop and requested the repair. A week later, the watch was working again. He did not feel he had saved a precious object, nor decide that everything old deserved keeping. But he understood that price answers a different question from value. What he had paid covered labour and parts; what he regained was a little sound he had thought he could do without.
