درست آنا العربية الْفُصْحَى سنة كاملة قبل أن تسافر. كانت تقرأ نصوصا قصيرة وتكتب رسائل واضحة، ولذلك توقعت أن تفهم كل حديث بسيط. لكن في أول زيارة إلى المخبز، سمعت كلمات لم تعرفها، وشعرت أن دراستها لم تساعدها.
عادت في اليوم التالي، وطلبت من البائع أن يتكلم ببطء. ابتسم وشرح لها أن بعض الكلمات التي يستعملها من اللَّهْجَة المحلية. كتب اسم نوع من الخبز على ورقة، ثم قال الاسم الذي تعلمته في كتابها. فجأة فهمت العلاقة بين الكلمتين.
بعد أسبوع، أصبحت آنا تطلب خبزها وحدها. لم تتعلم لهجة كاملة، ولم تنس الْفُصْحَى؛ بل بدأت تضيف كلمات جديدة إلى ما تعرفه. وفي دفترها كتبت: «المشكلة لم تكن أنني لا أعرف العربية. كنت أحتاج إلى جِسْر بين لغة الكتاب ولغة هذا المخبز».
English translation
Anna studied Modern Standard Arabic for a whole year before travelling. She could read short texts and write clear messages, so she expected to understand every simple conversation. But on her first visit to the bakery, she heard unfamiliar words and felt that her studies had not helped her.
She returned the next day and asked the seller to speak slowly. He smiled and explained that some of his words came from the local dialect. He wrote the name of a type of bread on a piece of paper, then said the name she had learnt in her book. Suddenly she understood the connection between the two words.
After a week, Anna could order her bread on her own. She had not learnt a whole dialect or forgotten Standard Arabic; she had begun adding new words to what she knew. In her notebook she wrote, ‘The problem was not that I didn’t know Arabic. I needed a bridge between the language of my book and the language of this bakery.’
